Garden weed control. Weed control is the act of ridding weeds from your garden. I sometimes even use rhubarb leaves. In lawns minimize soil disturbance by using a sharp knife with a narrow blade to slice through the roots of dandelions and other lawn weeds to sever their feed source rather than digging them out. Once the weeds are several inches above the soil pull or hoe them out.
Pull the weed close to the base lifting out as much root as possible. It sounds simple but it can be difficult. Keeping a covering on your garden soil with mulch is one of the most important things you can do to keep it weed free. And of course some weed removing tools may be handy too.
It s important because weeds will steal nutrients water and sunlight from the plants you want in your garden. Some good mulching materials include hay chopped leaves wood chips grass clippings and newspaper. Our natural garden weed control barrier of choice for this year is cardboard. Keep in mind that weed seeds can remain dormant for a long long time.
Attack a weed as soon as it shows up. Encourage weeds to grow before you plant your garden. Then plant your own crops. You can remove weeds at any time but immediately following a good rain often makes it easier.
Dense planting and the application of mulch can be one of the most effective methods in managing weeds. While under no illusion that any organic or natural solution will achieve 100 weed control the method we ve chosen for our blueberry patch works quite well. Lay sheets of clear plastic over your garden in early spring to warm up the soil and encourage weeds to germinate.
